“You don’t get vaccinated, you get sick, you die.”
Mario Draghi was Prime Minister of Italy from February 2021 to October 2022, after serving as president of the European Central Bank, governor of the Bank of Italy, and a vice-chairman at Goldman Sachs International. His degrees are a first degree in economics from Sapienza University of Rome (1970) and a PhD in economics from MIT (1977). He has no degree, license, or training in medicine, virology, epidemiology, or public health. He’s an economist who ran central banks.
He said the line above at a July 22, 2021 press conference introducing Italy’s green pass, adding “or you make others die” and calling an appeal not to get vaccinated “an appeal to die.” His government made the pass mandatory for restaurants, cinemas, theaters, and other venues from August 6, 2021. On January 5, 2022, his cabinet approved a decree making vaccination compulsory for everyone over 50 until June 15, with a €100 fine for refusers, and requiring a “super green pass” (vaccination or recovery only) to work from February 15, with fines of €600 to €1,500 for workers without one. He pushed the age-50 mandate through over the objections of the League, whose leaders had wanted a higher age cutoff. Italy became the first country in Europe to mandate Covid vaccination by age.
At that same July press conference he promised the green pass gave people “the guarantee of finding themselves among people who aren’t contagious.” Fact-checkers at Pagella Politica ruled that false: vaccinated people could be infected and infectious even then, if less so. At his year-end press conference he blamed it on the knowledge of the time. He also claimed that three-quarters of Covid deaths were among the unvaccinated, and Pagella Politica found the figure was 41% for the period its data covered, though Draghi never said which period he meant.
Draghi told Italians the pass guaranteed a room full of non-contagious people, then explained, with a straight face, that that had been the best available information at the time.
