The Chrysalis Residences_ Vouliagmeni, Greece
The “Chrysalis Residences” is a residential project of 314 architecture studio. It is located in Vouliagmeni, Greece, very close to the sea, and it consists of four independent residences, with each one including both a basement and a top floor. As the name suggests, the design is inspired by the shape of the butterfly, whose wings extend from the properties to the garden area, providing shade for the ground floor and sea view for the top floor, where occupants can enjoy unobstructed sea views. In addition, the wings are bent in a way to provide privacy.
In ‘butterfly’, transparency is used as a bonding element between the exterior and the interior. U-glass is extensively used, replacing or camouflaging the solid walls to allow the maximum natural light to permeate the interior. At the same time, this type of glass serves as a distorting filter, blurring the movement of the occupants, adding to the dwelling’s privacy and overall atmosphere as seen from the outside.
Contrasting materials are used to amplify the residents’ interaction with the structure. Specifically, the glossiness of the u-glass is paired with the matt effect of the white cement stucco chosen for the walls, floor, and ceiling. Moreover, the rocks placed around the properties add an earthy element to the composition, with the bigger ones hiding structural elements and storing glass panels, therefore leaving only the aesthetically necessary things in sight.
The surrounding landscape is designed to complement the composition, with artificial lakes reflecting the butterfly’s organic shape, the glass surfaces, and the vegetation, while creating a feeling of seclusion and peace. Floating paths pass over the lakes and plants to connect the ground floor balconies, offering in this way an alternative route, closer to nature.
314 architecture studio
Pavlos Chatziangelides founded 314 architecture studio in 2004. He studied civil engineering in National Technical University of Athens 1996-2002 and architecture engineering in The University of Thessaly 2006-2012. In 2004 he acquired a Master of Arts degree in design. The name 314 of the studio, is inspired from the mathematic symbol π = 3,14 that is used to count the area of the circle. This reference is related to the philosophical dimension of the concept of the circle. The basic characteristic of his design beside the ecological, social and programmatic dimensions of the project, is the creation of a shell that urges the user to experience an abstraction.

Balancing elegantly over the seafront at Kavouri, Litous House is an advanced spatial arrangement in modern domestic architecture. Designed to maximize the potential of a narrow sloping site, the residence is arranged over four-storeys, released by the lightness of its steel-frame structural engineering to soar above the landscape below. Within the vertical axis an inherent transparency offers a complete engagement with the external elements and sky above, allowing the internal programming to extend outwards across multiple levels to create a stylish, open atmosphere, reminiscent of the modernist architecture of Sao Paolo.
Organized in a longitudinal direction, the house is arranged around three facades and demonstrates an artistic approach to materials throughout its visual language and composition. The entrance portico is lined with black volcanic stone, embedded with a series of angled aluminium blades that are illuminated at night to form a shimmering parade of light refraction. Arriving from the front gate portico, the promenade begins with a vertical garden that grows intertwined among layers of green glass batons, creating a delicate play of patination and shadows across the front courtyard to the formal arrangement of double-height wooden and glass paneling of the entrance facade. An ornamental pool, with mature olive tree set into an island, completes the ensemble, arranged beneath a striking angular opening that frames the blue sky above.
The language of the seaward facade is composed around nature and water. A waterfall cascades over volcanic stone from an infinity pool set into the terrace above, with skylights embedded within the pool filtering light down into the living areas beneath. Further planting of climbing ivies and jasmine softens the massing across the lower levels, lightening the architectural profile above, with a second living wall of green glass batons providing a beautiful translucent screen across the northern aspect. The living elements within the architecture typify the building’s environmental ethos, with sustainable materials specified throughout and a green roof with solar panels demonstrating the design’s sustainability credentials. The internal programming is organized to offer flexible spaces for socializing and relaxing throughout, with low stone benches arranged around the full height windows in the master bedrooms from which to enjoy the captivating views of the coastline below.
Tsolka Architects (founded by Nikos & Marialena Τsolka) is a creative architecture & construction practice based in Vouliagmeni, Athens.
We are a team of architects, interior designers, civil engineers, and unique individuals who seek to bring an intuitive and creative approach to all aspects of the built environment, working across the fields of architecture, interior design, construction, and real estate development.
Through years of practical experience we have created a distinctive portfolio of projects that fulfill a range of programmatic needs and built to various scales. Attention to detail and constant research are paramount in refining and innovating new ways to achieve the impossible, building virtuoso compositions of line and form.
Our design principles are rooted in the classical traditions of modernism but embrace the dynamism and fluidity that contemporary construction can offer. We engage to an artistic sensibility that is visible throughout, stemming from the belief that beauty in architecture can be achieved only through an emotive, personal response to the project.
As part of the architectural process, our designs work in harmony with the natural elements of the surrounding area and its history, understanding that each new building is but one piece of a larger urban and natural puzzle.
Our team challenges the idea of what modern architecture should be, working in collaboration with the client and with experienced individuals on their field of expertise to create a bespoke architectural journey. For each interior programme we seek to create spatial narratives, crafted using our own unique design languages. We demonstrate a confidence and knowledge of working with traditional and modern materials, with furniture, decorative surfaces and lighting systems tailor-made and specified in-house.
Our practice designs and builds to the highest environmental standards, striving to maintain a lower carbon footprint throughout all stages of the construction process. Our detailed research into the emerging SMART technologies ensures the most efficient use of energy to ensure low emissions, as a move towards complete energy self-sufficiency.
